I am interested in the use of complex repeated elements to create fields of light and color whose energy is uplifting and profound. Since 1983, I have incorporated personal references into the work, adding another dimension to both my conceptual development of the work and how it could be viewed. I began painting word based imagery in 2009, after completing a four year project honoring my father. This new work is actually created by repeating and layering the word or words in the title, usually positive words like “strength,” “hope” and “independent.” Using my own hand writing as the basis for each interpreted word, I then fragment each letter, assigning colors to each fragment. Repeated over and over, these words become purposefully illegible, serendipitous rhythms of lines and colors in transition. I am interested in the “flow” the marks make, rather than any hint at legibility. My intention is to create a viewing experience that is calming yet energizing, both stimulating and meditative.
